We decided to base ourselves for a couple of nights in the Belgium city of Mechelen, for no much better reason than neither of us had been before. It was a good choice.
I had happy start in that I was upgraded to a larger room!
The main square is spacious by any standards
Obviously we had to look around the cathedral
Then a wine bar to recover, overlooking the canal. I like a view
And then off for dinner. There didn't appear to be many fine dining options but we settled on somewhere that was a bit of a walk from the old town. Only on arrival did we discover that it was inside this fine building, and the building was now a hotel. General policy is to resist hotel restaurants as they tend to be overpriced, but in the end we enjoyed our meal, and the dining room was very nice, spacious and relaxing.
