Newcastle

It was interesting to find how many delegates at our annual conference in Newcastle had never been there before, and how favourably impressed they were. We stayed in the Newcastle-Gateshead Hilton which is right on the Tyne. But that really is now the finest part of the City in many ways, transformed from its industrial past to a waterfront of smart bars and concert halls, plus of course the bridges. Particularly striking at night. The Sage cocert hall is also very striking as a modern concert hall. Would be lovely to have that in London on the South Bank instead of the Festival Hall.

On the Saturday we headed off to St James' Park for the Newcastle v Swansea game. No out of town stadium this, although we could walk from Gosforth to the ground across the Town Moor.

Town moor, somewhat sodden. St James Park is on the horizon on the left

Interesting contrast - Georgian terrace on the right side, concrete pillars of football ground on the left

Newcastle 1, Swansea 2. Natives restless
