An Evening with Sir Clive Woodward

I have just enough interest in rugby to make it worthwhile going along to this lecture by Sir Clive. Of course it wasn't all about rugby (which most of the audience would have liked), but more about his coaching business and how he used his methods to win the world cup single-handedly (with a little help from some talented rugby players).

It all sounded terribly impressive as we heard it, but on a little reflection his secrets when boiled down were, practice hard, try to know more than the competition and make everyone feel involved. Following all of that I can't help that maybe the real secret of our success in the world cup was that we had some good players at the time.

He was of course very slick, so one did feel that he had given the exact same presentation a zillion times. But it was none the worse for that. Most enjoyable was just the breakdown of play at the end of the World Cup Final and the decisions made leading up to the drop goal. Its that sort of insight that is most interesting fo the rest of us, rather than how you become a leader in industry.
