The birds

So my ice bound trip also gave me the opportunity to spot some birds. Most exciting from my viewpoint was seeing a little group of Mandarin ducks sheltering from the cold in Grovelands Park. These are just about as ornamental as a bird can get, and are not native to Britain, but have escaped the collections of the people who originally imported them to beautify their lakes.

Another escapee is the Parakeet from Australia. Far more prevalent than the mandarin Duck, but equally vibrant colour compared to our native species.

Even more ubiquitous immigrants - Canada Geese

But back to British - Coot out of water - note the wonderful feet!

Three Greylag Geese neatly lined up for me

Mute Swan, nicely set off against the ice in the background

A lone Pochard
