With nothing special lined up for a Friday night I went for another of the Dublin Castle's "pot pourri" nights of miscellaneous bands. Starting with the Resolve. Big heavy rock sound that might fit an arena more than an intimate venue and lukewarm crowd. Tried to look the part in black t-shirts, but they just ended up looking like the terrorist wing of Fathers for Justice.
Next up were a young punk band Live Wire who were much more to my taste, and much more photogenic. Dynamic group who just looked like they were having a great time. Only criticism is that they didn't tell us much about themselves, just that they were on all social media. A bit of searching later found that there is an AC DC tribute act of the same name, and they come up vastly more often. I would go and see them again, but they didn't even advertise where they were next playing. Bit of a missed opportunity.
Acushia sounded promising "indie and post punk flavours rinsed for some cracking tunes". To be fair at least they didn't sound like every other indie band, but still didn't leave much of an impression on me other than being rather earnest.
But the real act I had been tempted by were the headliners, The Velvet Thunders. A covers band on the punky side of rock. They in no way looked the part, but my god they sounded it. Just such a great group of musicians, the tubby hairy bloke on vocals had great voice and banter. And this isn't just a covers band, in that they just repeat the old songs. They do them in their own style. So this show had a pretty punk version of Britney Spears' Hit Me Baby One More Time. Along with Johnny B Goode, Smells Like Teen Spirit, God Save the Queen, well you get the picture - punk to pop but all in their style. A very happy audience at the end.
