Coldplay at the Emirates

My first time inside Arsenal's stadium, but for a rock gig rather than a football match.

Sneer as one might at Coldplay (and people do), but they are a stadium band who put on a great, great live show. This one had all the tricks. Must have cost a fortune to put on, and they charged enough, but wow it was worth it. Yes, definitely had the wow factor.

I went with a colleague from work with his family (plus one additional child who, being an Arsenal season ticket holder, had useful home knowledge). I think we were all blown away by this, even the cool teenager who clearly wasn't going to show it. But truly a great night.

First support were Ash

followed by Marina and the Diamonds.

But nothing could upstage Chris Martin. This show went for all the effects.

Spectacular lights? Tick.

Lasers? Tick.

Blown confetti? Tick

Balloons? Tick.

Fireworks? Tick.

But the new and utterly stunning effects (Olympic opening ceremony designers take note) were the wristbands we were each given. These lit up and flickered at appropriate moments during the performance. It was amazing. My colleague described the effect as like a garden of flowers that lit up. Awesome. No other word for it.

Needless to say it worked better the darker it got.

And given it was a stadium and you wouldn't see much at the back (barring on the big dream catcher screens), Coldplay even came to a little stage at the back for the encore, spotlit in a rather eerie light.

Just a terrific show.
