Lewes

Lewes is a very cute little Sussex town. An old port which preserves much of its historic architecture. So a nice streetscape,

 it is home to Harveys brewery (sited in a much more attractive position than most industrial buildings!),

and it also has a decent amonut remaining of Lewes castle. This was started shortly after the Norman conquest, although the only truly original feature left is just a mound.

Nevertheless, the rest of what is left is very well presented, with lovely gardens

 and a nice little museum.

 And the castle does afford very attractive views across the town and the surrounding countryside.

I was spending the weekend with a young family - including a three year old plus a toddler. Who did enjoy the castle. Great foresight, the Normans, to build a children's playground that would last a 1000 years.

Although they were just at happy with the back garden. But it is a pretty huge back garden. I did my bit by minding the pair of them for a short while on Sunday morning whilst their parents got ready. Interesting challenge for me, given how mobile they are and with such a large ground floor to move around in. I have a much greater admiration of sheepdogs now. Still we all survived the experience unscathed. Relatively.

I got home in time to have a quick dabble in my own much tinier garden. But with a good camera angle you wouldn't know it.
