The Colosseum

Even more tragic than the Forum has been the desecration of the Colosseum, which despite its impressive size even now, was actually used as a reclamation yard for building materials. Once it would have been resplendent in marble, but it has all been nicked to clad all those redundant churches.

One ticket gets you into both the Roman Forum and the Colosseum  and all I can say is its damned easier to buy a ticket at the Forum entrance (although the entrance itself is hard to find!) than it is at the Colosseum  There was an awful long queue which I sailed past.

And of course Trajan's Column in the evening sun
