Millwall v Coventry

Everything pointed to a grim experience. Coventry winless so far and only one place off the bottom of league 1, Millwall riding high, Wet day. And its Millwall. There is a reason why South Bermondsey is not widely featured on tourist maps of London. And on top of that trains were running badly. My train to Moorgate was diverted to Kings Cross, but then at Finsbury Park re-routed to its original destination, only then to be further delayed. So I was a bit grumpy before getting the fortress that is Millwall. My attempt to prise an overpriced drink out of the indolent staff serving the away supporters was depressing too. I can imagine this is not the most exciting of jobs, but if this had been America there would have been smiles and attempts to serve as well as one could. Here the conglomeration of staff tried their best to avoid eye contact with those they were serving, attempted to chat amongst themselves rather than do anything and only as a last resort acknowledged anyone at the other side of the counter.

But at least once one gets outside the grim concrete box you do get a good view of the pitch at Millwall as they let you have the upper stand above one goal, and you are at least a distance away from the baying Lions fans.

The Den is not for nothing sited off Cold Blow Lane. Yes, somehow amidst a sunny unseasonably warm September week it was blowing a cold wind. I was zipped up in my coat as far as I could be and wishing I had brought my gloves.

.

And the game was actually a decent one. Coventry looked to b struggling but then got an excellent goal out of the blue from Marvin Sordell who has played at a much higher level and on this showing displayed the ability that might get him back. If allied with some consistency. But most impressive display came from GaĆ«l Bigirimana in midfield who was a the heart of everything. Really busy and looks a good re-signing. On the minus side was a series of slapstick bits of defending. Which explains way City are still win less after this 1-1 draw. Another defensive slip, a failed interception led to Millwall's equalizer when the Sky Blues were just looking good enough to hold on. Really should have been three points.
