First bear, and Lake Louise.

Well obviously we had read lots about bear attacks and how we should be careful. Thibault already had his survival technique prepared, run, knowing you had a companion who was slower. Er, that would be me. But actually we found the easy and safe way to spot bears was to go one the main roads and watch for lots of cars dangerously pulled over on the hard shoulder. When you see this tell tale sign you know there is a bear on the highway. They are apparently partial top the dandelion roots readily available on the road side. As you can see they do put a bit of wire across, just in case.

Anyway, we saw our first bear on the way to Lake Louise. This is a famed beauty spot a short drive from Banff. All the guide books tell you to get there early in the morning. Wise advice. Car parks are heaving by mid-morning. We just made it in time.

In fact the tourists do detract seriously from an undoubtedly scenic spot. It is just too easy to reach. So these photos, minus a thousand tourists behind me, give an unrealistic view of peace and solitude. Hiking around one side of the lake is easy and the crowds do at least thin out a little bit.

Much of the tourist problem stems from the Fairmont hotel at the bottom of the lake. It is huge, and well frequented. And probably the inspiration for the Shining...
