Laguna Lodge Tortuguero

The star point of this hotel was not the rooms, which were ok if a somewhat gloomy cabin type arrangement...

..but the grounds. Which were spectacular. Beautiful planting with a lot of wildlife coming in - well the place was surrounded by rain forest except for the river at the front and beach behind.

Either a Social Flycatcher or a Boat-billed Flycatcher. Hard to tell the difference (well for me it is!)

The hotel reception building was well, funky.

The dining room opened out to the river. Great setting even if the food was a little mundane.

And the two pools are gorgeous.

As I said, two pools, this was the second. Not that either were exactly crowded.

As I wandered round I heard a great thump on the lawn in front of me. It was an iguana which had just fallen out of the top of a tall tree. I immediately assumed it was injured as it was a massive fall. But apparently they are adapted to withstand such falls. It just stood still for a little while as if slightly stunned, then padded off into the undergrowth.

Later sw another iguana climbing a tree.

All the cabins have access to a veranda. Nice place to sit out. If you don't mind the mosquitoes.

And before long, saw my first Toucan. Spectacular birds. This is a keel-billed toucan. there are several species, with differently coloured beaks.

Behind the hotel is a long beach of very grey sand.

And the gardens don't just have showy blossoms. There is space for cultivating impressive fungi too.
