War on Drugs at the O2

This was an outstanding gig. While quite a fan of WoD, the support came from an act called Slowdive, who I have paid good money to see on their own in the past, so was very chuffed to getting them thrown in. Also musically a decent match for War on Drugs.

Slowdive's hey day was the nineties, but they have come back with new record and tours. Also slightly unusual in having a female main singer who also plays keyboard and is the main driving force behind the band.

It is fair to say that War on Drugs are not the most dramatic of bands in stage presence, nor the most high profile, but the fact that they were playing the O2 signifies their popularity. I have seen them before, but this was definitely the best performance by Adam Granduciel and his American band mates. The other nice thing about them is that they are generally on the up, by which I mean that rather than a band for whom one has a nostalgic affection for a first album which they could never quite equal, this is  a band whose albums have got successively better.

And the guitar riffs are wonderful. Awesome experience.
