So while my working colleagues were heading into the office, your semi-retired blogger could, on the spur of the moment, decide to spend a day in Kew.
St Anne's Church
Kew Green
I made a full day of it - entering at opening time of 10am and not leaving until nearly 6pm, taking copious numbers of photos in between. So even though this entry is a long one, it still doesn't cover the whole day. On a fine Spring day Kew has so much to admire. And here are the highlights!
This Corsican pine is said to be Kew's unluckiest tree, having twice been struck by lightning and once by a light aircraft in the 1920s (when all planes were fortunately light, but unfortunately also often flew very low....). Really it has been pretty lucky to survive all that lot!
Now this is a fairly new feature that I had not previously explored, an installation called the Hive. It is a metal structure with sounds played within it to give a feeling of humming, without actually being a straight bee humming soundtrack which would sound pretty oppressive. I am normally a little skeptical of these modern artworks, but this one is jolly clever and definitely worth a mosey around. You can get right inside.
Not a beehive - but inside Kew's ice house
The right time of year to see the magnolia blossom.
