Leaving Bordeaux in our hire car headed for Bayonne we wanted a little stopover. And where better than the biggest sand dune in Europe? Never heard of it? Nor us. But when you know it is nearby you really have to see it. And climb it.
As you can see below there are two options. To the right, for hardy souls, you just plod through the sand. Very hard work. Or as you can see top left, you can take the plastic stairs that have been inserted. Still fairly hard work, but a darned sight easier than the soft sand.
Needless to say hard man Thibault went for the extra exercise approach. Clarissa and I are sane.
Needless to say one is not alone at the top. It is a family destination. Great way to tire little ones out. And it is impressive. Beach without the water. No fear of drowning, but you could go over the edge and it is a long way down.....
That excursion left us a little late for getting to Bayonne for lunch. And this is a very dull part of the country - having been planted up with conifer plantations. Just row upon row of trees of exactly the same age in tight formation. But nevertheless we found a likely looking spot for lunch in a village called Lue.
It looked so enticing. Picturesque indeed.
And the food looked very nice. But actually was disappointing. The pictures can lie. The duck salad was very heavy, the salmon overcooked and the ice cream, well it wasn't gelato....
