The Courtauld Gallery reopened last year after a significant bit of renovation. They have done an excellent job. Of course, it is a good start when you are inside as magnificent a palace as Somerset House. (I remember when it was home to the Inland Revenue, and the courtyard was used for civil servants parking.)
The Munch exhibition was interesting although also a little disappointing, only in that it was quite small. You don't get a lot for your money! I guess everyone knows "The Scream" but if you are like me you won't have seen much else of his work, so it was worth it to see a greater range of what he produced.
But the permanent collection is wonderful, especially if you like impressionist works as this is the best impressionist collection in the country. And now all set in a simple, bright setting that doesn't distract from the artworks.
The collection is not just French impressionists - some good renaissance works too.
