Another Day, Liquid Zoo and Lost Alice at Paper Dress Vintage

Maybe I could start this review with the venue. Paper Dress Vintage. By day a vintage clothes shop, by night a bar and music venue. Next time I go I should take some more photos of the venue itself. Downstairs is the shop with a bar at the back and a beer garden beyond - in a small space with the graffiti strewn  railway line behind. This is no rural idyll.

Upstairs is the venue itself "decorated" as you can see with items of vintage clothing on the walls. And the tiniest bar you can imagine in one corner.

And freshly installed that very day - air conditioning. No, that wasn't a good thing. In the first place gigs are supposed to be sweaty. But more seriously, this unit was way over the top. It was freezing. Next time I come to a gig here in a heatwave I will bring a jumper!

This gig was billed as having joint headliners, so there was one support, Lost Alice, possibly for balance a predominantly girl band with a bloke on lead guitar. Can't say they left much of an impression on me musically. but then they didn't sound any worse than Sofy, who was the opener at Finsbury Park the next day (see next entry!) and she was playing to thousands.

First of the co-headliners was Liquid Zoo, all the way from Australia. Two things to say at this juncture. First sorry about photos but the lighting here seemed to focus on the ultra violet spectrum.

Second. Wow. Just wow. How can there be bands this good that one hasn't heard of? Well, obviously, they live in Australia. But they are just great. Proper guitar band. Lead singer has a bit of the Mick Jagger about him - think young Rolling Stones rather than geriatric Rolling Stones. Just a truly terrific set. Would go and see them again in a heartbeat (but no, not going out to Australia - they would have to come to me😂)

And last but not least, Another Day. I have seen them and reviewed them often enough in the last year on this blog, so not much more to say than that I like them. And appreciate them more each time I see them. I have gone from just enjoying the performance to getting really into their songs. Which I rate more every time. So I will be continuing to see them when they announce more dates around London. Would like them to do a longer set. This was co-headlining and Liquid Zoo certainly deserved equal billing. But there is something nice about seeing a long headlining set by a band. More opportunity to build a set and atmosphere rather than just blasting out 6-8 of their best.

Astile launching the performance

Not a mosh pit, but the brothers making space for some backflips. As you can see, it is not a big venue!
