Kaohsiung

Kaosiung is a large industrial town on the south west of the island. Now first out I must congratulate ourselves on finding the hotel - Smokey Joe's. Wacky doesn't cover it. A 1950s America theme, including front reception in a Cadillac. And even more congratulations to Thibault for getting us there through rush hour traffic, a one way system and an incredibly tight parking space into which a Cadillac certainly would not have gone.

Unfortunately the weather in Kaosiung was much the same as the last time Thibault visited - distinctly wet. Nevertheless he had fond memories of the art district being developed out of old railway buildings and warehouses, so that is where we headed.

Now, some of the public art was amusing, intelligent, playful and inventive. Like converting this manhole cover into a frying pan.

Yes on closer inspection the penis of the beast has a face. Inventive?

An even more inventive disguise for a manhole cover...

But that was enough of the railway art. We headed on to a small island which promised a fort, a lighthouse and good seafood.

Well the fort was the bleakest and least architectural of any I have seen. In the midst of mist. ANd rain.

The light house didn;'t seem worth the effort so we took comfort n the seafood.

Having inspected it all outside (there were no menus) what we chose was cooked to order.

Then it was back to face the elements.

This is the lighthouse we missed out. I feel my telephoto lens did the walking for me.

But the weather certainly didn't augur well for our next two nights in the beach resort of Kenting
