Ortygia is an island just off the mainland city of Syracuse, easily reached by a bridge. Its the old heart of the city of Syracuse and a great place just to roam about in. Which is what we did after our morning in the archaeological park

What makes Syracuse cathedral special is that it is really a Greek temple. The pillars are merely incorporated into the outer walls of the cathedral. So you are almost visiting two old attractions, one ancient and pagan, the other baroque
