York - the Castle District

Fairfax House is a wonderful example of an 18th century townhouse, and a wonderful example of restoration. One needs to buy the guidebook to fully appreciate what has been done to the building. Amazingly it had been converted into a cinema (not the auditorium, but was used as a foyer, toilets etc) and had been used for dance classes and even as a bike store. Now it houses a fine 18th century collection of furniture, gathered together by one of Terry family (of chocolate fame). Unfortunately no photos of the interior allowed, but here is the exterior.

For most people the main reason to climb up to Clifford's tower is for the views. My prime motivation was in truth that its an English Heritage site, and on the way to the Castle Museum, so why not take it in?

Fairfax House can just be seen from these shots. The Tower does offer good views, even on a rather gloomy day like today.

Courtyard of Clifford's Tower. Rather empty.

The castlke Museum is a splendid example of its type. Its not full of precious objects, but rather takes everyday objects from various eras to give an idea of what rooms, streets and shops would have been like. An expanded version of London's Geffrye Museum
