Blossoms, Cabbage and Rory Wynne at the Roundhouse

This did have Stockport feel, and its probably not often you hear that. But I went to this NME tour gig at the Roundhouse with a Stockport County supporter and both main act and fist support hail from this Manc outpost.

My mate and Blossoms are both fine adverts for the town in different ways. Alas the same could not Northern swagger routine you need to have something behind you - Great songs, great voice, great personalty, great looks. Pick any of those. If you are a newcomer with none of those in particular you just come over as an arrogant twat in need of a slap. Enter Mr Wynne.

Next up were the much-lauded Cabbage. What one might term an exciting band. If you like punk, well this is it. Lots of attitude and snarling vocals, but proper songs and personality. A touch of the Iggy Pop from the guy who peeled off his t-shirt a couple of tunes into the set.

And finally the truly wonderful Blossoms. Their debut album is a wonder to listen to, strong throughout although opening with the cracking Charlemagne (with which they closed this show). Their songs are clever and original, as are the lyrics. They should go far, and I think would do if indie was a more fashionable genre. Unfortunately we live in a world of grime and the likes.

Lead singer Tom Ogden has personality, excellent vocals and some flair (as well as hideous dress-sense -but then I hated the Seventies for style, and this was exactly how you dressed to be fashionable in 1972. The set included at least 4 numbers not on the album, plus a cover of Half a World Away and Imagine. The set was nicely paced. Just terrific evening all round. Will definitely try and catch Blossoms again when next they pass by Down South.

These photos are from a sort of acoustic interval, with the uncle of one of the band members on keyboard.
