Hoover Dam and Lake Mead

The plan for our first day proper, ie day with three of us together, was to drive to Zion via the Hoover Dam. Before you see the Dam you see Lake Mead, the reservoir created by the Dam, and the biggest reservoir in the USA. It is huge. 120 miles long and a surface area of nearly 250 square miles. And over 500 feet deep. As well as supplying water to millions of people, it is used for boating and the like.

The Dam is just about the most famous in the world. Built in the Great Depression, it has to be seen as a good investment. It is also a sculptural edifice, distinctly art deco in style, as well as being functional. And vast, about 750 feet high.

These two stylised winged angels are the most striking of art deco monuments
