Gallipoli

Today was our day of transit between Bari and Lecce. On the way we took in the pretty seaside town of Gallipoli (not to be confused with the famous World War I battle site which is in Turkey.)

Once you get through the modern urban sprawl you find yourself crossing a little bridge into the old town, marked by the imposing Aragonese castle. We parked up and then wandered into the winding streets, somewhat marred by tourist shops, but also with plenty of restaurants. We like restaurants.

And then you get the views over the sea by the marina. Which are beautiful.

There is a fine beach too, but we were not on a beach holiday. However inviting the water looked.

Needless to say impressive churches come as standard in any South Italian town.

Lunch at seafood specialising restaurant. Very cool.

We felt the castle was worth a visit so in we went after payment of very modest entry fee. Nothing stunning to see but an enjoyable wander around the fortifications nonetheless.

If there was a stand out sight in the fortress it was seeing this domed room with a modern exhibition of photos of old olive trees.

And the final site to see in Gallipoli is this fountain. Not immediately impressive, until you realise that the lower parts are over 2000 years old.
