St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury

After the cathedral. Canterbury's next great attraction is St Augustine's Abbey, which actually predates the cathedral. Unfortunately it did not fare so well in the Reformation, initially being converted into a palace for Anne of Cleves (who also didn't fare too well), eventually falling into a totally ruinous state. Now it is more of an archaeological site than a recognizable abbey.

It is now in the care of English Heritage and a nice little audio guide is very helpful for understanding what you are seeing.

A hill at one end of the grounds offers fine views back towards the city
