National Museum of Scotland - the old stuff

Even though I was doing three to six shows a day at the Fringe there was still time to fit in other things. So for example I visited the new extension to the Museum of Scotland. The new bit ironically holds the oldest stuff. And really old. The exhibition starts with Scotland's ancient geological past. One interesting thing I never knew was that once England and Scotland were on the ends of different continents. They just moved together. Slowly.

Lots of prehistoric artefacts, very nicely and calmly set out in new galleries in the basement

Now my friends told me an amusing story about the viking skeleton above. Their little girl mused as to how this chap died. her younger brother said it was obvious. Looking up he pointed out that he must have fallen from the balcony above and gone splat

Upstairs we get into historic Scotland rather than prehistoric. This is reproduction of a silver casket owned by Mary of Queen of Scots. Made in England. Of course.

The museum has lots more to see, and I have seen much of the rest of the collection on previous visits. But will return here too
