Mystras

Mystras is a quite extraordinary site, and easily missed out on a trip to Greece as it is a bit of a pain to get to. But well worth the effort. The settlement lies up the slopes of Mount Tagyetus. So it is all uphill. Which therefore offers great views across the Spartan plain

And unlike so much of Greek historical remains, it is not a classical site. Rather it is Byzantine, although it was also occupied right through the Ottoman period only to be abandoned in the 1830s in favour of a settlement at the foot of the mountain. I can see why that would seem a good move in days before motorised transport if you were no longer concerned about being attacked. But it has had the consequence of preserving the settlement from development, albeit in semi ruined state. It is highly atmospheric.

Back to our new base at Kardamyli on the Peloponesian coast for drinks and then dinner
