Belsay

Belsay is what Heritage would look like after the apocalypse. It is a great 19th century classically inspired mansion, stripped and gutted, ultimately by dry rot. Its the skeleton of a great house. I believe they describe it as in a state of benign neglect, by which they basically mean its too expensive to restore. Which is sad in that it would make a terrific restoration project.

In addition to the Hall, it has wonderful quarry gardens, obviously not exactly flower rich in November but still well worth walking round to enjoy the autumn colours as well as the grand setting.

That leads on up to Belsay Castle, a ruin but a romantic one, rather than the austere corpse of the Hall.

And finally a trip to the lake. I do like swans.

Oh, and how about this for an image of Monday morning? Dawn in Gosforth.
