Shanghai Day Three

After a late start due to our long day in Hangzhou we had a super dim sum lunch at the Crystal Jade, a chain restaurant in China. On the way we could just marvel at the height of the new city around us.

At this point Jean realised she had lost her medicine. No problem - back to the hotel and the concierge just dashed out to a local pharmacy to replace it. Nothing too much trouble.

Then we were back on track with a visit to Jing'an Temple. This was a fine experience. Its a large temple, and intriguing in its juxtaposition with modern commerce all around it.

One feature of the courtyard were two incense burners, making the air feel as thick as Hangzhou's smog.

After that we crossed town to see the Propaganda Poster Art Centre. No photos of this as they don't allow photos. Which is a pity as the place was a hoot. And very much Thibault's thing as he left clutching a group of replicas which he bought for his bedroom. Perhaps the funniest of these posters, and totally unintentional, was one showing Sino-Soviet solidarity. Unfortunately one couldn't now look at it without thinking it must be the gayest poster of all time. It features too chiselled young male workers staring out at you cheek-to-cheek. Just so gay.

Too late for any further sightseeing so we found a little bar to drink in which served reasonably priced cocktails, so Jean and I availed ourselves of one. Then on to dinner. I had found the ideal restaurant in terms of art deco styling except it had shut and was now replaced by a western style bar. We hadn't come all this way for over-priced beer and burgers. Luckily we found a Japanese restaurant nearby and I enjoyed one of my rare forays into Japanese cuisine. Sushi was great. Not cheap, but nice.

So now it was Saturday night. I headed off for bed, leaving the young lovers to find Shanghai's nightlife. It sounded fun, but I am 30 years too late for that.
