Pet Shop Boys at the O2

So I had a target on my return from Prague to go out every night of the week, and Tuesday was booked out to seeing the Pet Shop Boys with some friends.

I knew 3 sets of friends going to this concert, covering about a 20 year age range. The music is pretty timeless, as is the fashion. As a live act, in a way Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant are not a winning combination. Chris' trademark is standing still behind his keyboards. Neil basically just does a bit of marching. So what is the attraction? Well a Pet Shop Boys gig is a spectacle, Its the lights, the laser show, the endless bizarre costume changes and the dancers. Its the sheer inventiveness of the show. They should really be put in the Design Museum.

For example, at one point the static Chris Lowe comes out in a "hat" which is in the form of a glitter ball on which lights are shone and so for a moment the entire arena is being lit by this hat. You have to be there. It is just a great show. In terms of artistic creativity they should be up there with David Bowie. And you don't get the pretentious crap from them that you get with Bowie.
