One of the much advertised things to do in Naples is a tour of Naples underground. While I don't regret doing it, by the same token it wasn't an amazing experience. It starts by going down into the aqueduct hollowed out of the tufa by the Greeks and Romans and used as a water supply up until the 19th century and was utilized again as a bomb shelter in the last war.
This bit was used as a wine-cellar by nuns
After going through a very narrow bit of tunneling (genuinely of concern to the obese) with the aid of a candle one gets to part that has been refilled as a reservoir. Quite cool really.
Back up at street level you then get taken into a very ordinary house which about 40 years ago was discovered was built into the the Roman theatre. In fact there are many houses which are now recognised as being built into the fabric of the theatre, but just too many families live there to relocate them and open them up.
Underneath the house is effectively the Roman backstage changing rooms.
