Carnac

Justly, the most famous tourist sight in the region is Carnac. It is the French version of Stonehenge. One might say Stonehenge went for quality, Carnac quantity. It is however, very impressive - long avenues of standing stones of varying shapes and sizes.

You are not allowed to wander around the stones in summer, ostensibly to protect the wildflowers, although you can enter as part of guided (and paid for) groups. But actually I preferred just being able to walk around the outsides as it allowed one to see the stones without people in modern dress cluttering up the sight-lines.

One frustration of all this for me is that despite all the archaeological studies, we will never really know why these were built. I like mysteries, but only solvable ones.

Carnac also has a pretty village and just beyond it a truly beautiful bit of coastline with wide sandy beach.

And beyond the beach area, the yachting marina at Trinite Sur Mer. This is a top area for messing around on boats.
