Charleston has a rather greater maritime presence than Savannah, right up to the present day. Thibault likes his aircraft carriers.
So our first proper bit of sightseeing in Charleston was to visit Fort Sumter, whose claim to fame is being the setting for the start of the American Civil War. A quieter place now, with a nice little ferry ride to get there.
As an extra treat, we visitors were invited to assist in the raising of the American flag over the fort. A very big flag. Americans like their flag.
