Georgia - Ocmulgee National Monument

The start of another American road trip with Thibault. This one would involve 10 days looping around Georgia and the Carolinas. Flight was into Atlanta, but all we saw of that was the airport hotel, defined by endless bland corridors. Battery farming for tourists, efficient, but soulless.

After an overnight stay it was straight out on the road to Savannah, our fist real stop. But to break up the journey as much as anything we visited an old native American site, Ocmulgee. This was a decent stop. A nice little museum and then the chance to wander over to the main remaining monuments. notably a large temple mound, although there are other mounds and platforms.

This was once a large settlement with a distinctive culture, from the artefacts in the museum it felt more akin to the South American cultures than the cliches from cowboy and indian films.

The restored interior is rather impressive.

Incredibly, they built a railroad right through the archaeological site. and it is still very much in use today
