On the way back from Houghton we stopped off in Great Massingham. A picturesque village with a huge village green We stopped off for a drink (and a loo break) at the Dabbling Duck pub. Even saw a goldfinch from the beer garden.
The Green contains a massive "village pond". With many dabbling ducks.
The Church of St Mary at Great Massingham is typical of many churches in East Anglian villages, being pretty ancient and Grade 1 Listed. The tower dates back to the 15th century.
The porch is 13th century. It has polygonal angle buttresses terminating in spirelets. Honest. I wish I had taken a photo of he font because it "is shallow pedimented with cusped ogee arches under crocketted gables on the bowl", but actually it didn't look too impressive.
Not all village towers have square towers. Some octagonal and a few circular - like this one.
