Twenty Twenty

I can't say I am a big cricket fan, but was quite happy at the prospect of a departmental social at the Oval to watch Surrey v Somerset in a Friday evening 20-20 match. It was a great laugh. I know this format is not approved by purists, but it is great fun. Basically there is no time for defensive cricket. Players pretty much have to have a go at hitting everything.

And this was very watchable although not exactly tense. Surrey set off like a train, and Roy hit a century, no mean feat in this accelerated form of the game. Somerset never looked like catching up so the game petered out. But plenty of overpriced alcohol and the good company of my colleagues made it entertaining throughout. And obviously once we had got back from the Oval, most of us headed off to a pub to extend the evening. I think I did best though by not going on again after closing time, before things got too messy.

Jason Roy, century maker, happily fielding by the boundary, and above taking time to set off a Mexican wave from the crowd. Yes, the game was that close that it didn't really require full concentration. He still took a catch though.
