Palacio Lebrija

Tucked away on a narrow street is the Palacio Lebrija. This is one of those satisfyingly small places that the tour groups miss, so one can wander around unharrassed by guides ushering their sheep around for another boring chat in poor English.

This palace was remodelled by a wealthy widow who purloined some mosaics etc from Italica and effectively built up her own little museum. As usual for Sevillian palaces it has a gorgeous courtyard. I want a house with a courtyard.

Now it is a constant marvel to me that in this day of the internet and a world of talented linguists people who run tourist attractions make no effort at all to get translations of information for their visitors. Here they have clearly just used google translate or similar, and not had the gumption to even read the gobbledygook before printing it into an information board. SO note 4 lines up from the bottom the Spanish equivalent of "Error. No translation"

Upstairs are the private rooms. Sadly one wasn't allowed to take photographs, and one could only go round as part of a guided tour. And our guide for the tour in English was French. A French girl whose English was far poorer than almost any French person I have ever met. And ironically, of the five of us on the tour, two were French. And at no point did the girl decide to relent from her cod English to give them some morsel in their joint native language. Ah well, luckily the objects largely spoke for themselves. This old lady had idiosyncratic tastes, but that made it all the more interesting to see.
