Altes Museum

After the old museum, where else than the Old Museum? Another splendid neo-classical building, oft described as Karl Friedrich Schinkel's best work. And he did a lot. Brilliant architect, painter and designer.

This hosts the city's classical collection (aprt from various big pieces in some of the other museums). This is my favourite museum in Berlin. Only irritation was that the museum shop doesn't have a guide book to the collection.

Below is the star exhibit, a bronze of the praying boy. Except he might not be praying. Its a rare ancient bronze, but not all of it is original. In fact the arms are a Renaissance addition, so in fact he might instead have just had arms to the front rather than up like this. Well I thought that was interesting.

This sarcophagus has the charming story of Medea on it. you can work your way through it on the close ups. Husband Jason gets touched up by princess. Spurned Medea gets revenge by giving the princess a nine present - a garment which when worn burns her skin (and gets her dad when he tries to help). Not content with that she then kills her own little children by Jason. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned eh?
