Palermo Cathedral

Maybe if we had realised that visiting the cathedral was free we might not have bought tickets. But then we would have missed out. As while the nave of the cathedral is free, the main body as it were, there were all sorts of extras, like the roof, the crypt, the bishop's palace etc. So we went for the lot

Before going to the cathedral, as part of he entrance fee, there is a very small church to visit

We also went onto this little balcony

After that we visited the Bishop's palace, now a museum

The upper floor of the Bishop's Palace is spectacular. Obviously no expense spared on the bishop.
Views from balconies of the Palace

And into the cathedral itself
Some Norman tombs ended up here

The crypt, full of Roman sarcophogi from which early church leaders slung out the dead to be replaced by themselves.

And finally up onto the roof. This takes some time. You have to queue along the way as they don't want people queuing along the spiral staircases, so they hold you back for a while to let crowds pass through. It is a justly popular thing to see.

See the queue?
